“His laugh is the working definition of infectious laughter,” says Doug Berman, the longtime producer of Car Talk. He remembers the first time he ever encountered Magliozzi. “I’d just hear this laughter,” he says. “And then there’d be more of it, and people would sort of gather around him. He was just kind of a magnet.”
Unlike 99% of my fellow Americans, I have zero interest in cars. But I listened to Car Talk, the National Public Radio show hosted by Tom and Ray Magliozzi. I tuned in just to hear them crack each other up.
Here are five irresistible audio clips. Don’t miss “Tom’s Marriage Advice” and the story of Gail, the Tollbooth Fugitive.

Somewhere on the Heavenly Highway, Tom’s driving his beloved 1963 Dodge Dart. Thanks for the laughs, Beautiful Man!
I love Car Talk. I have no interest in cars either, but those two brothers were so hilarious! Sad news.
Thanks, I think they are the sweetest guys, with their Beantown accents 🙂
I watch ‘Top Gear’ for the same reason 🙂 Jeremy Clarkson never fails to make me laugh even though I know zilch about cars 🙂
I checked Google and even his pictures made me chuckle. There are some where he’s moving at high speed with his mouth wide open, like he’s in a wind tunnel.
He’s really funny and the show is great 🙂 He just doesn’t give a crap what anyone thinks of him!
As soon as I saw the title of this post, I knew I was in for a treat. Reading their weekly column in the newspaper every Saturday morning guaranteed a great start to my weekend, and lisening to those audio clips guaranteed a great start to my day today.
When I read of Tom’s death, I thought about wrting a post on the brothers myself, but I didn’t….and perhaps it’s just as well, because you’ve done the job better than I could’ve (for one thing, I’m not exactly the Magliozzi Brothers of computer experts).
Great post!
Thanks so much! I had no idea there was a column–I’ll have to check that out 🙂
This post created a spike in my site stats, more evidence, if any be needed, of how beloved are the Brothers Tappit.
Really sorry to hear about Tom Magliozzi’s death. I was a devoted fan of Car Talk for years. I also owned a 1963 Dodge Dart with a Slant 6 it was my first car and I drove it until my brother totaled it on March 29, 1979. Great Car! Sweet man! I my deepest sympathy to Ray.
Did you know that they graduated from MIT?
Liz
Yes, both MIT grads! The “other” university in Cambridge, Mass.! That’s amazing, that you had a 1963 Dart. If Tom had known, he would have proposed 🙂
Car Talk was such an enjoyable listen. It didn’t matter that the topic was cars, it could have been anything with those guys. They were just funny and their interaction with each other was fun. The world is going to really miss Car Talk.
Yes. As some consolation, they have a show called “Best of Car Talk.” There’s plenty of material to choose from, since the show ran for so many years 🙂
Nice
