Forgive the pun, but I couldn’t resist (hey, it was VH1’s #1 song of the nineties…). Pinot Grigio has seemingly taken over from Soave as the most popular, inexpensive Italian white, but I can recommend this incredibly low-priced ($7.99) bottle of liquid refreshment (Soave DOC 2010 by Posenato).
I was unable to find any tasting notes online for this wine, but there’s an interesting article ca. 2011 about “the return of Soave.” Let’s hope they don’t mean Gerardo.
At first I thought the beverage was unimpressive, but it was simply too cold. Once it warms up a bit, a very pleasing aroma of tropical fruit (mango?) comes through, and the promise of the nose catches up to the palate. A table wine, yes, but a lovely bargain…
And now for your delectation, a sample of the lyrics to that classic song of seduction, “Rico Suave”! (Click the link for the YouTube version–it must be seen and heard to be believed.) I understand that Mr. Mejía is now a Christian youth pastor.

Just a gigolo… Click for source, a fun commentary on Gerardo’s ubiquity in 1992 (thejesuscodpiece.wordpress.com)
Seguro que han odo que yo soy educado
Soy un caballerito un chico bien portado
Un joven responsible y siempre bien vestido
Yo no se quien ha mentido
I don’t drink or smoke aint into dope
Wont try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope
My only addiction has to do with the female species
I eat em raw like sushi
No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno
Si me enterno, you me enfermo
Mi apariencia es dura, vivo en la locura
No me vengan con ternuras
So please don’t judge a book by it’s cover
There’s more to being a latin lover
You got to know how to deal with a woman
That wont let go
The price you pay for being a gigolo
There’s not a woman that can handle
A man like me
That’s why I juggle two or three
I aint one to commit, you can omit that bit
You pop the question that’s it
Haber uno, dos, tres, cuatro mujeres
Y la situaci all no muere
No es un delito calmo mi apetito
Con un llanto o un grito
So again don’t let my lyrics mislead you
I don’t love you but I need you
Would you rather have me lie
Take a piece of your pie and say bye
Or be honest and rub your thighs
Ha ha ha – My only addiction has to do with the female species
I eat em raw like sushi 🙂 Too funny!
Yeah, I thought the lyrics were priceless! Wish I could read the Spanish ones.
Well the name does mean rich and smooth, so…sounds good to me.
For a low-rent wine, that Soave was very tasty!
Rico Suave LOL!! I remember that song!!
Yeah, I thought he was hilarious and always remembered him. But when I heard the song again, it sounded different.
I’m gonna pull it up on youtube to hear it again!
